About I photograph
what stays with me

"I began in the silence of the landscape, where the only movement was the light shifting across the horizon. Today, I find myself drawn to travel and street photography."

I'm Chathura Kodikara, a photographer based in Colombo, Sri Lanka. My work spans landscape, architecture and travel. Almost entirely in black and white, with colour appearing only when a scene insists on it.

My journey with the lens started seriously in 2013, shaped by the rugged edges of the Cleveland Way and the evening tides at Scarborough Beach. Living in the UK for four years taught me to appreciate the quiet, minimalist scenes that lend themselves so well to black and white. For me, stripping away color makes a frame simpler and more honest.

Street photography came most recently, and it scared me most. Pointing a camera at a stranger requires a different kind of attention — and a different kind of nerve. I'm still learning both.

The journey, in moments
2009
Origin
The first roll of film in my hometown, Matale. I shot with a borrowed Olympus OM-10, falling in love with the mechanics of the craft, even though those first few rolls came back entirely blank.
2013
Perspective
Moved to the UK and began my first serious series with a Nikon D7100 and a 12-24mm lens. Walking the coast of Scarborough, I learned how to frame the vastness of the sea and the silence of the cliffs.
2022
Contrast
An intensive year traveling across Sri Lanka. I found myself obsessing over light and shadow, focusing almost exclusively on black and white to simplify the complex beauty of my home island..
2025
Evaluation
A shift toward the narrative of travel. I began to appreciate the vibrancy of color and the energy of movement, realizing that photography isn't just about the scene, but the experience of being there.
